Two years of a website that did nothing
Matthew Brownjohn builds and renovates homes in the Blue Mountains, from new custom homes and second storey additions through to renovations, decks and pergolas. He had built a strong local reputation on the quality of that work, and a website that was doing nothing to help him.
The old site was a DIY Wix build he had had for about two years. It was hard to read, it gave nobody a reason to choose Brownjohn Constructions over any other builder, and it did not show up in Google for the work he actually wanted. The contact form was so poorly placed it was almost invisible.
In two years, it produced not one enquiry.
For a builder relying on word of mouth, that is a specific and expensive problem. Most people who hear your name look you up before they call. If what they find looks like an afterthought, they quietly move on and you never know it happened.
The cost of a website that does nothing is not the money spent on it. It is the two years of enquiries that went somewhere else.
The approach
A site built to be found, and to be believed
Matthew came to Jordan with a few rough ideas about what he wanted. What he needed was a website that made the quality of his work obvious, that ranked for the searches Blue Mountains homeowners actually type, and that made getting in touch simple.
A DIY Wix site of about two years standing.
Hard to read, with no clear reason to choose this builder.
A contact form that was almost invisible.
Nowhere to be seen in Google for builder searches.
Zero enquiries in two years.
A WordPress site built around the work itself.
A dedicated, search optimised page for every service.
Clear calls to action on every page.
Page one on Google for 53 searches.
First enquiry on launch day.
The old home page. Hard to read, and nothing on it said why a homeowner should choose this builder.
The new home page. Full width project photography, a clear structure, and the next step in view.
The old contact form sat over a photo, so the fields were almost impossible to read.
The new contact page puts the phone number, email and hours beside a form that asks the right questions. The site went live on 30 January 2025. The first enquiry came through the same day.
The results
The website paid for itself in the first week
Six days after launch, Matthew went out to quote a job in Glenbrook. He asked the homeowner how he had found him.
The answer is the whole case study. Brownjohn Constructions was the first renovation carpenter to come up in Glenbrook that was not a paid ad, so that is who the homeowner called.
Matthew’s message to us that afternoon was three words long.
Two enquiries came through in the first few days. By the end of the first week one of them had turned into a job.
Enquiries kept coming, and then doubled
These are enquiry form submissions recorded on the website. Phone calls straight to Matthew are not counted, so the real number is higher.
Website enquiries per month
Average enquiry form submissions per month. Higher is better.
| Period | Website enquiries | Average per month |
|---|---|---|
| Old Wix site, about two years | 0 | 0 |
| 2025, from launch on 30 January | 22 | 2.0 |
| 2026, January to August | 31 | 3.9 |
| Total since launch | 53 |
Enquiries in 2026 are running at nearly double the 2025 rate. The comparison that matters most is the one against the old site, which produced none at all.
Enquiry figures are Elementor form submissions on brownjohnconstructions.com.au from 30 January 2025 to 31 August 2026, from all traffic sources. The count for the previous Wix site is Matthew’s own.
Visibility
Found by people who had never heard of them
Word of mouth only reaches people who already know your name. Search reaches everyone else. The old Wix site was effectively invisible in Google, and the new one is not.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Google search impressions, May 2025 to August 2026 | 95,448 |
| Average impressions per month | About 6,000 |
| Searches ranking on page one, June to August 2026 | 53 |
Where the site sits for the searches that bring in work
| Search term | Position |
|---|---|
| first floor home additions blue mountains | 4 |
| deck construction blue mountains | 4 |
| backyard pergola blue mountains | 6 |
| decking blue mountains | 6 |
| home renovations blaxland | 6 |
| house extensions blackheath | 6 |
| first floor home additions lower blue mountains | 7 |
| second storey extensions woronora heights | 8 |
| home extensions snowy mountains | 9 |
| 2nd story additions penrith | 9 |
| second story extensions penrith | 9 |
| house extensions blue mountains | 10 |
Positions are Google Search Console averages for June to August 2026, rounded to the nearest whole number. Only searches with 10 or more impressions in the period are shown.
For a business that had never appeared for anything, ranking on page one for first floor additions, decking and pergola work across the Blue Mountains is what turns a website from a business card into a source of work.
In Matthew’s words

"I came to Jordan with a couple of rough ideas on what I wanted for a website and without hesitation he had an angle that would come to bring us more sales. The website is second to none, catches the eye and is extremely professional. For those reading search Brownjohn Constructions and take a look for yourself and you will see! Couldn’t recommend JS website design enough there’s not enough stars on google for this team. Within the first week of the new launch the phone was ringing the difference having a good website makes is phenomenal!"

What made the difference
Three things, and none of them are complicated.
The old site was not free. It cost Matthew two years of enquiries that went to the builder who showed up above him.
Next step
Is your website doing this for you?
A website that does not bring in work is not free. It costs you every enquiry that went to the business showing up above you.
We will look at your website, your rankings and your Google Business Profile, and tell you plainly where the gaps are and what they are costing you.
